WordPress was very gracious in reminding me that 10 months have passed since I last posted to my blog.
Thanks for the reminder….
Truth be told, I cannot believe that 2016 is over. I know everyone says it, but the year really flew by. So much happened, yet where to begin? Well, let’s start with Alexander: over the summer, he took a coming-of-age two week fishing trip in Alaska with J and several very good friends, then started his senior year of high school (gulp!). He and J have spent countless hours together working on the Jeep (which is going to be the death of me, thankyouverymuch…) and he has really grown so much in the past year. Not just physically (although he is taller than me now), but mentally. He has such a sharp wit and can see the world with such clarity and perspective.
Sabrina completed her gap year and started college, which was seriously one of the best decisions she’s made. She loves her school, has expanded her social network, and is constantly hosting her group of friends at the house for study sessions. I couldn’t be more pleased and proud, especially since she remarked to me that, “Wow, Mom, you were right – college is sooooo different than high school…”
J and I were fortunate enough to spend two glorious weeks this summer in Italy with my parents. We started with a three-day sojourn in Rome, then embarked on a cruise around the Italian coast and various ports. It was a full-circle event for me, as we (meaning me, my parents, and the kids) made a similar trip in 2013. I was single and very ready to move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to start a new life. Of course, I met J two weeks later – and here I am, three years later, in Austin, Texas….. Lesson learned? Never say never 🙂
This year I was also fortunate enough to be welcomed into the Bake a Wish Foundation, which provides free birthday cakes to neglected/abused/abandoned children and also the elderly/disabled that would not otherwise receive a birthday cake. It has been tremendously soul-satisfying to know that something I’ve baked brings so much joy.
In other not-so-good-news, Sabrina totaled her car (she’s fine, thankfully), and Alexander cracked up my truck (he’s fine too). J and I also made the painful decision to sell our ranch since the likelihood of us building out there are slim to none. It took me awhile to come to grips with that decision, since I had such high hopes for the property. But things change and we move on.
So what’s ahead for 2017? My goal this year is to travel a bit more, since the posse are extremely capable of being self sufficient and responsible. After all, “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”.
One more thing -I do plan to commit more time to writing and maintaining my blog. I’ve let too many other things occupy my time, and this is something that’s important to me.
